Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Do you operate your own vehicles?

A. Yes, we do. We operate our own fleet of motorhomes. The Mercedes based Spirit 5 is the backbone of our fleet, supplemented by a smaller number of Spirit 3's and Toyota Hilux based Cub 3's. We are currently embarking on a fleet renewal program. The first batch of our brand new Fiat Ducato panelvan-based 3 berth motorhomes will be coming on line in December 2010. These will be replacing the Spirit 3 and the Cub. 2011 will see the the Spirit 5's supplemented by a brand new range of 5 berth coachbuilts.

However, we are also able to book a 4x4 camper or a motorhome for you from our colleagues in the industry should you require one that we don't have in our fleet.

Q. If I submit a "request for quote" form, does that mean I am committed to the hire?

A. No. Submitting a "request for quote" form merely allows us to send you a proposal. This then opens communication between us and yourselves and allows us to fine-tune the proposal to meet your requirements. Only after you have accepted our quotation and we have, in turn, sent you a confirmation, does this constitute a confirmed booking.

Q. Are the first and last days counted as part of the hire?

A. Yes. Due to the time and logistics involved in preparing a camper for hire, it is necessary that both the first and last days of the hire are counted. This is an industry norm.

Q. Do we have to bring any camping equipment or bedding?

A. No. Our campers are fully equipped for camping. We supply all cutlery, crockery, bedding, towels, barbeque and camping equipment. The campers themselves are fitted with gas cookers, microwave ovens and fridges, so you will be completely self-sufficient. There is no extra charge for camping equipment and bedding.

Q. What type of driver's licence is required?

A. An international driving licence, or a licence with a photograph and wording in English, or a licence approved by the South African traffic authorities, or a valid South African driver’s licence is required for all drivers.  Drivers age limits are 23-75 and no leaner drivers allowed.  If the licence is under 2 years old, a 5% surcharge will apply in the event of an insurance claim. A copy of your driver’s license must be be submitted before collection of the vehicle.

Q. What happens if the vehicle has a break-down enroute?

A. While every vehicle is thoroughly serviced and checked, breakdowns can occur unexpectedly. The hirer is authorised to have minor repairs carried out and to settle directly with the supplier; we will refund the cost of the repairs to you. Larger repairs will be arranged by us. We are contracted to The AA (Automobile Association) Fleetcare emergency breakdown service which operates nationwide, so help is always at hand.

Q. Is Helderberg Camper Hire SATSA approved?

A. Yes, we are SATSA approved and bonded. To ensure your utmost peace-of-mind, we have complied with the stringent requirements of the South African Tourism Services Association.

Q. What type of insurance cover do you offer?

A. We are insured by Zurich Insurance Company, one of the leading insurance companies in the world. Our vehicles are comprehensively insured, with a range of co-payment waiver options to suit your budget. See our rates pages for further details.

Q. How do I go about making a booking?

A. The first step would be to fill out our "Request a Quote" form. This will give us some idea of your requirements (feel free to use the comments section to note any special requests or queries). We will then respond with a quotation - or quotations, should you like to compare more than one - which can then be refined until you are completely happy with the details. Once you are satisfied that the quote fulfils your needs you will then follow a link which will allow you to accept the quote. We will then respond with a "Confirmation of Booking". Only then will you be charged with a deposit which can be negotiated to be acceptable to both parties. This is usually 10% of the total hire cost, but depends on the length of the hire and the season.
